Britannia Fire’s P50 fire extinguishers to roll out across Landsec’s UK portfolio

According to Britannia Fire, the rollout of its service-free P50 composite fire extinguishers across Landsec’s £12 billion real estate portfolio is set to deliver substantial cost and environmental benefits.

The P50 extinguishers will replace traditional models across Landsec’s properties, halving the number of fire extinguishers required and removing the need for annual servicing.

This move supports Landsec’s sustainability objectives, as the P50 is completely PFAS-free, has a lower carbon footprint, and aligns with the upcoming UK ban on PFAS substances.

Successful trials highlight benefits at key sites

Trials conducted by Britannia Fire’s UK distributor, Safelincs, showcased the potential savings.

At sites such as Trinity Leeds, switching to P50 extinguishers cut costs by half over a 10-year period and reduced the carbon footprint by two-thirds.

Following these results, a full rollout was initiated and is now 10% complete.

Landsec is also using Britannia Fire’s scrappage scheme to dispose of old fire extinguishers in an environmentally responsible way.

End-user benefits and positive reception

Billy Cunningham, Director of Fire Safety at Landsec, said: “For a large company like Landsec, the benefit of switching to the P50 was huge.

“The fact that the water mist P50 is so versatile and can be used to tackle all types of fires experienced in office and public spaces, including live electrical equipment fires, means that we’re typically halving the number of fire extinguishers needed at sites and cutting costs considerably.”

He added: “The cost and environmental savings have made the upgrade easier to justify to building managers and tenants – especially where there are service charges involved.

“By simplifying the decision-making process, the fire extinguishers are more likely to be used, and small fires contained quickly.”

Britannia Fire emphasises P50’s compliance and impact

Andy Spence, Joint Managing Director at Britannia Fire, highlighted the broader industry implications of adopting the P50.

He stated: “More and more businesses like Landsec are realising the benefits of switching to the P50.

“The fact that they need less fire extinguishers and don’t have to pay for costly annual servicing is a game changer.”

He clarified that the P50 is compliant with UK laws and regulations, including CE Marking and BS EN3, adding that annual maintenance advice is voluntary and not applicable to this model.

Britannia Fire’s P50 fire extinguishers to roll out across Landsec’s UK portfolio: Summary

Britannia Fire has announced that its P50 fire extinguishers are being deployed across Landsec’s £12 billion real estate portfolio in the UK.

This rollout, currently 10% complete, aims to halve the number of extinguishers required while eliminating annual servicing costs.

Trials have demonstrated a 50% cost reduction over 10 years and significant environmental benefits.

The P50, which is PFAS-free and compliant with UK safety standards, requires only visual inspections.

Landsec has also opted to use Britannia Fire’s scrappage scheme for responsible disposal of old equipment.

This initiative aligns with Landsec’s sustainability goals and prepares the company for the impending PFAS ban.
